Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit on May 29 to celebrate Sikkim’s 50th Statehood anniversary, the Gangtok Municipal Corporation (GMC), in collaboration with the Urban Development Department (UDD), launched a large-scale cleanliness drive across key areas of the city.
The drive covered the stretch from Ganju Lama Dwar to Paljor Stadium, including the popular MG Marg. The entire area was divided into four zones, each managed by GMC councillors with the support of officials, staff, and dedicated Safai Mitras.
MLA Delay Namgyal Barfungpa stressed the importance of community participation in maintaining a clean environment, saying it reflects the collective responsibility of citizens. GMC Mayor Nell Bahadur Chettri and Deputy Mayor Tshering Palden Bhutia described the cleanliness drive as a tribute to the Prime Minister’s Swachh Bharat Mission and a step towards realizing Sikkim’s vision of a cleaner and stronger state.
