On the occasion of International Labour Day, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang expressed his heartfelt appreciation to the hardworking labourers of the state, acknowledging their indispensable role in the nation’s economic and social growth. In a message to the public, CM Tamang emphasized that the contributions of the labour force are the cornerstone of society, shaping not just the economy but the very foundation of progress.
“Today, we salute the dedication and sweat of all labourers who have tirelessly worked to build a prosperous Sikkim. Their relentless efforts have been instrumental in the development of our state and country," said Tamang, underlining that Labour Day is a tribute to workers' sacrifices worldwide.
The Chief Minister highlighted that the Sikkim government has consistently prioritized the welfare of labourers, reflecting its commitment to enhancing their standard of living. “We understand the importance of workers in our society and are taking concrete steps to ensure their dignity and well-being. One of our key measures is the revision of monthly wages, which have been increased to Rs. 15,000, providing workers with a more secure and respectable livelihood,” Tamang stated.
In addition to wage revisions, the government has focused on improving housing and essential facilities for workers. “We are also expanding health benefits, with the establishment of a 100-bedded ESIC Hospital at Mamring, Rangpo, ensuring quality healthcare for workers and their families,” he added.
The government is also making strides in strengthening labour welfare systems. A review of the administrative machinery is underway to enhance governance, while technological innovations, including an online registration app and a Labour Clearance Certificate Portal, aim to streamline processes and ensure transparency.
To further support workers, financial assistance is being provided under the Building and Other Construction Workers (BOCW) scheme. In line with the Sikkim Labour Registration Act of 2021, a mass registration campaign is being conducted to protect workers' rights and entitlements.
“Through these initiatives, we are not only enhancing the welfare of labourers but also promoting fair labour practices, fostering safe working conditions, and ensuring equitable growth for all," CM Tamang said.
