Sikkim: Sun Talks series highlights mental health in Gangtok

The District Administrative Centre (DAC), Gangtok, in collaboration with the Department of CSR, Sun Pharma Laboratories Limited, Sikkim, and implemented by Stars of Hope, successfully conducted the second series of Sun Talks at the STNM Hospital auditorium. The event focused on the theme, “Mental Health and Resilience: A Way Forward for Protecting Youth from Drug and Substance Abuse.”
The program was graced by several dignitaries, including Shri Tushar G. Nikhare (IAS), DM Gangtok; Tenzing Loden Lepcha (IPS), Sr. SP Gangtok; G.L. Meena (IAS), SDM (HQ) Gangtok; D.D. Sharma, Director, Skill Development Department and Nirmal Chaudhary from MSME. Representatives from Sun Pharma and Stars of Hope also attended, highlighting their commitment to social responsibility and community welfare.
G.L. Meena welcomed the gathering and emphasized the importance of mental health initiatives and collaborative efforts between civil society and administration.
DM Gangtok Tushar G. Nikhare underlined the importance of channeling the energy of youth toward societal betterment while addressing the responsibilities of rehabilitation homes in safeguarding mental health.
Tenzing Loden Lepcha provided an in-depth analysis of drug abuse in Sikkim, focusing on the demand-supply dynamics and the need for a multi-stakeholder approach involving civil society, administration, and law enforcement.
Dr. Sonam Lasopa, Senior Clinical Psychologist (STNM Hospital) delivered an insightful session on recovery strategies and relapse prevention, emphasizing holistic approaches combining psychological support and community involvement.
K.C. Nima, Founder of Freedom Facility shared his journey as a recovered addict and highlighted the transformative role of rehabilitation centers.
Rinzing Bhutia, Nivasa Female Rehabilitation Centre shared her inspiring personal recovery story, offering hope and guidance to those struggling with addiction.
Primus Bhutia, athlete and motivational speaker encouraged the youth to utilize their time constructively and steer clear of addiction, emphasizing the power of sports and self-discipline.
The MSME Gangtok branch and the Skill Development Department presented eligibility criteria and benefits of various schemes, urging attendees to register for government initiatives. Documentaries showcasing Sun Pharma’s healthcare interventions at STNM Hospital were also screened, earning appreciation from attendees.
