Sikkim’s well-known filmmaker Tribeni Rai has made the state proud by representing the Northeast region at a big national event in Mumbai. She was recently invited to be a Moderator at the World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit (WAVES 2025), a respected platform for filmmakers, artists, and media professionals. The event is being held at the Jio World Convention Centre and is organised by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, with support from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).

Tribeni Rai led an important panel discussion titled “Challenges and Prospects of Cinema in North East India”. She was joined by some of the biggest names in Northeast Indian cinema, including Padma Shri awardee Jahnu Barua from Assam, Dominic Sangma from Meghalaya, and Haobam Paban Kumar from Manipur. These filmmakers have made major contributions to Indian cinema, and having Rai moderate this session shows how much respect she has earned across the film industry.

The discussion focused on the real problems and future hopes for filmmakers in the Northeast. Topics like lack of funding, limited reach of films, and the need for better infrastructure were openly discussed. At the same time, the panel spoke about how rich the culture, stories, and talent of the Northeast are, and how they can make a bigger impact on national and international platforms.

Tribeni Rai has always been known for her deep connection to Sikkimese culture. Her films often show the daily lives, traditions, and emotions of the people of Sikkim. She uses her art to tell real stories that touch the heart. Her work is honest, thoughtful, and full of meaning. Because of this, she has become one of the most respected voices in the world of regional cinema.
